Water Runs Over Gutters

If gutters slope too severely they don t hold water and water could splash over the sides in heavy rain.

If your gutter has been previously installed rather than taking it down and redoing it you can easily place a small strip of metal flashing under the drip edge and over the back of the gutter as shown by the illustration at the bottom of this page so the water will shed into the gutter. Too much water being forced down the valley on your roof. Thankfully there s a fix for this and it s called a gutter splash guard. The longer you let water sit on your roof the higher the chances of developing roof leaks.

If gutters don t slope water gathers in them. To sum it up gutter diverters can help with overflowing water in gutters only on inside or outside gutter corners. If you have a steeply pitched roof the water may be traveling so fast it splashed over the gutter. Gutters must divert water out and away from your home to ensure that your foundation is protected.

I do not recommend gutter covers if you have a low pitched roof and i don t recommend mesh gutter covers. In roof valleys rain water will travel faster especially during a heavy storm or if the gutters are already full and the water will skip over the gutter and right onto whatever or whomever is unlucky enough to be beneath it. The amount of collected water increases until it spills over the sides of the gutter. To prevent the amount of water over running your gutters one of the best options is using an l shaped piece of metal the same metal as the gutters riveted to the top of the outside edge of the gutter at the base of the valley.

2 install splash and mesh guards on your gutters. Once you ve cleaned out the mess always wash out the gutter and downspouts with a garden hose to flush out the remaining dirt.
